Hsu Tsing brings her son Cheng Chung-sheng to have their fortune read. She is pick pocketed in the crowd. Chung-sheng hotly pursues the pickpocket, exposing himself to a dangerous situation. Luckily, his father Kuei-yuan arrives in time to get them off the hook. The three return home. Seeing that Hsu Tsing has failed to get the divination, her mother-in-law Li Fu-lien reprimands her and angrily orders her to bring Cheng Kuei-kai home for the Festival. Hsu Tsing goes to the pier to find Kuei-kai. After having cheated Piao out of his money, Kuei-kai is on the run and deliberately instigates the refugees nearby to plunder rice. Seeing Piao beating up a refugee Min, Hsu Tsing intervenes and brings him to Chou Tao for treatment. Out of gratitude, Min offers a family heirloom to Hsu but she turns it down.
